چکیده

purpose: to evaluate the relationship between central corneal thickness (cct) and optic disc area in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (poag). methods: the study was performed on patients with poag who were being followed at johns hopkins hospital. all patients underwent thorough eye examination, optic disc imaging with the heidelberg retina tomograph ii (hrt ii), and ultrasound corneal pachymetry. exclusion criteria were prior ocular surgery and low-quality hrt ii images (hrt standard deviation> 50). sas version 8.1 was used to generate pearson correlation coefficients (r). results: of 199 eyes of 152 participants, 57 eyes met the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study. mean cct was 530.7 +/- 35.5 microns.  black subjects had thinner corneas (blacks= 520 microns, whites= 546, others= 550, p < 0.05). white subjects had smaller discs (whites’ mean disc area= 1.84 mm2, blacks= 2.44, others= 2.38 p= 0.0003). univariate analysis revealed that cct is inversely correlated with optic disc area (r = -0.215, p= 0.12, n= 53). after including all hrt images with standard deviation < 100, a statistically significant correlation was observed among white subjects (r = -0.282, p= 0.02, n= 60). conclusion: our findings demonstrate that optic nerve size might have some correlation with central corneal thickness. it may be that the protective effect of thicker corneas is not solely due to mis-measurement of iop, but may also be an indication of more robust optic nerve head tissue.

Evaluation of central corneal thickness in patients with ocular hypertension and primary open-angle glaucoma.

AIM To determine correlation between central corneal thickness (CCT) and applanation intraocular pressure (IOP) in normal patients with primary open angle glaucoma and patients with ocular hypertension. METHODS Two-year retrospective study designed to determine correlation between CCT and IOP. Records of 121 patients were included in the study. Inclusion criteria were: IOP higher than 22 mm H...

Central corneal thickness measurements in patients with normal tension glaucoma, primary open angle glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, or ocular hypertension.

BACKGROUND/AIMS Recent studies have revealed patients with ocular hypertension to have thicker than normal central corneas and those with normal tension glaucoma to have thinner than normal ones, as determined by ultrasonic pachymetry. Since corneal thickness measurements and applanation tonometric estimates of intraocular pressure (IOP) correlate positively, monitoring of the former parameter ...

Optic disc topography in Malay patients with normal-tension glaucoma and primary open-angle glaucoma

BACKGROUND There are limited data concerning the optic disc topography in normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients living in Southeast Asian countries. This study aims to compare optic disc parameters in patients with NTG and POAG in Malaysia and to discuss the results in comparison with studies of NTG and POAG in other Asian countries. METHODS This prospe...

Central corneal thickness in primary open angle glaucoma, pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and normal population.

PURPOSE This study was designed to determine the relationship between central corneal thickness (CCT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) measured by applanation tonometer in glaucomatous, ocular hypertensive, and normal eyes. METHODS A total of 125 subjects were included in the study. Twenty-six had primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), 25 had pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXG), 24 had ocular hyperte...

Central Corneal Thickness in Primary Angle Closure and Open Angle Glaucoma

PURPOSE To quantitatively analyze central corneal thickness (CCT) in patients with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), and to evaluate its correlation with severity of glaucoma. METHODS In this retrospective study, records of patients with previously diagnosed POAG or PACG at a tertiary glaucoma service were reviewed. CCT was measured by ultrasound pa...
